A volcanic rocky island with a snorkel spot in the pools of Puertito Isla De Lobos, Lobos Island. It needs to be high tide to snorkel, there is a very strong current which reduces the further you swim inland, not suited for beginners. There are many schools of fish feeding on the rocks.

Lobos Island is a large volcanic island located off of the town of Corralejo on the North East of the island. There are snorkel tours that you can book that will take you into different areas of the island to snorkel, although due to insufficient people and sea conditions, we were unable to join a tour.
We took a sea taxi which is very easy to get from the harbor. You can either book online or pay at a booth at the harbor. The sea taxi runs approximately every hour and take about 15-20 minutes to get across to Lobos Island, it can be a bit choppy on the journey across, but you get a stunning view of the island.

As you enter the island from the sea taxi docking point it is a short walk to the right-hand side of the island where there are protected pools from the harsh waves. This area is called Puertito Isla De Lobos. It is important to go at high tide as these inlets are very shallow. Even at high tide, the water is still relatively shallow, so be careful of kicking or hitting the rocks which can be sharp. There isn’t anywhere to change into your swim costume, so I’d make sure you go in your swim costume.

Lobos Island Snorkel Spot
I snorkeled the inlet above the marker ‘Lagos de Lobos’ on the map below. There was less of a current in the inlet where many schools of fish were.
The visibility was good, the strong currents did bring sediment which can be seen in the snorkel pics. The main difficulty was the strong currents which would take you and the fish into the next pool of water. Stay in the pool and do not get close to the inlet. Fish are abundant, including Grey Mullet, White Sea Bream, Striped sea bream, Mediterranean Parrotfish, Gold-Lined Sea Bream, and Madeira Goby fish.
Top Tip:
Check the wave and tide forecast, it isn’t possible to snorkel at low-tide. Here’s a surf forecast website that I used to check the wave/tide.

The rare species include Barracuda, Sngel Sharks, Stingrays, Grouper, and Garden Eels. In the pools, there isn’t significant marine diversity, although you are very likely to see schools of fish feeding on rocks and the bottom and side that are relatively tame.

There is a small restaurant on the island, although I’d bring food and drink with you. One thing to be aware of is that there isn’t anywhere to store your valuables. There is volcanic rock as your entry and get out of the water which can be sharp. Make sure you have suitable footwear. The water temperature was relatively warm, I didn’t wear a top or wet suit. Make sure you go at high tide and check the wave heights before going for safety and a better snorkel.
Safety Tip:
The volcanic rocks are very sharp, if you have any aqua shoes that would help. Also, the currents are very strong at parts, and wouldn’t be suitable unless you’re a strong swimmer. Stick to the far pool of Puertito Isla De Lobos, which is more sheltered and further away from the stronger currents.

Tour Guide Options
There are a few snorkel tours that run from the main harbour of Corralejo, although they are dependent on the number of snorkelers. Alternatively you can get a return sea taxi across to Lobos Island.
Best Snorkel Spot
The best snorkel spot is located in the pools of Puertito Isla De Lobos on the East side of Lobos Island. Specifically, the pools further along the footpath are more secluded and generally had fewer currents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sea taxis operating from the main harbor, you can either book online or there are several booths selling return tickets. They cost approximately $20 for a return to Lobos Island. The trip out takes about 15-20 minutes, and the sea can be a bit choppy.
Snorkel tours operate from Corralejo, costing approximately $50 for a 3-hour trip (€45), taking you to different coves of Lobos Island.
Snorkeling is generally good all year round, it is more important to go during good wave and weather conditions and at high tide.
We didn’t go on a tour, we got a sea taxi from Corralejo port to Lobos, which took about 20 minutes. We then snorkeled in the coves ourselves at high tide. We went to the more inland cove as it can be dangerous nearer the sea with strong currents.
